Our Dexter story is not as unusual as we first thought. Actually it is a fairly common journey. Several years in a row, we attended fairs and livestock shows. While people were proud of their animals, a majority of the breeders were into commercial breeds and had been doing it all of their lives. So, most of the exhibitors could usually tell we were “city folk” and many of them kindly blew us off. The exotic breeds were just that, exotic. Our lack of experience scared us away from those breeds.
However, every time I visited with the Dexter breeders they were excited about their breed and anxious to answer questions. Many of them owned smaller acreage farms just like us. We loved the look and temperament of the animals and we especially liked the red ones.
When we were invited to visit a Dexter farm and interact with the animals we jumped at the invitation. After that farm visit we were hooked and our journey began.
